Malachi + Between the Testaments — “What Happened Between the Testaments?”

We have reached Malachi, the final book in the Christian ordering of the Old Testament. Turn the page in a Christian Bible and Matthew appears—but history didn't stop between those pages. This Sunday we'll cross the centuries between Malachi and the world of Jesus. Persia gives way to Greek rule, Alexander the Great changes the political landscape, Jewish communities encounter Hellenistic culture, the Maccabean revolt erupts, and eventually Rome arrives. If you've ever wondered how we get from the world of the prophets to the world of Jesus, this is the bridge.

METHODIST MOMENT — THE HORSES WHO BUILT METHODISM

Before Methodist churches had parking lots, Methodist preachers had horses. John Wesley and the early circuit riders traveled enormous distances on horseback, and those animals made the rapidly expanding Methodist movement possible. Early Methodists even asked whether their preachers were being “merciful to their beasts.” We'll meet some of the four-legged creatures who helped carry Methodism from community to community—and discover what their treatment tells us about Wesley's understanding of mercy.

KIDS — BRING SOMETHING FOR THE RAINBOW RUG!

Our kids are part of the community, so instead of adults always preaching a children's sermon to them, the Rainbow Rug gives our kids a chance to share their own little sermons with us. Kids are invited to bring a favorite toy, stuffed animal, book, rock, drawing, something they made, something they found outside, or anything else they'd like to show us. Childcare is available after the Rainbow Rug, and children are also always welcome to remain in worship. Wiggles, noises, questions, and moving around are part of having children in a community.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Whatever makes you feel comfortable being you. Dress up because you love dressing up or come in jeans, shorts, a T-shirt, bright colors, makeup, no makeup, or whatever feels right to you. There isn't a Mosaic version of what you're supposed to look like at church. Come comfortable. Show us your true self.
