An 8-Week Elementary Social Justice Curriculum for Lent
Help kids discover that Lent isn’t only about giving something up—it can also be about putting love into action.
Lent for Kids: Love in Action is a complete eight-week curriculum that takes children from the Sunday before Ash Wednesday through Easter Sunday. Each week connects a Bible story with a social justice theme and introduces children to a real young person who made a difference in the world.
Children explore fairness, generosity, creation and animal care, speaking up for others, welcoming neighbors, making sure everyone is seen, and discovering what can happen when people use their voices together. Along the way, they meet young changemakers including Ruby Bridges, Katie Stagliano, Bindi Irwin, Malala Yousafzai, Mari Copeny, Marley Dias, and Naomi Wadler.
Every weekly lesson includes a Bible verse, kid-friendly Bible story, featured young changemaker, discussion question, and simple hands-on craft designed to be completed during a 20–30 minute class. Most activities use basic supplies you probably already have—construction paper, markers, scissors, glue, and other inexpensive craft materials.
The curriculum concludes on Easter with a New Life, New Mission celebration that commissions the children to carry what they have learned beyond Lent, plus a printable My Lent Kindness Calendar for children to use throughout the season.
Best of all, the curriculum is undated and reusable. Because the lessons follow the Sundays of Lent rather than specific calendar dates, churches and families can use the resource again year after year. It is designed for elementary Sunday school, children’s ministry, classrooms, small groups, and family use.
