Zechariah — “Learning to Hope Again”
This Sunday we continue our journey through the Bible with Zechariah. The people have survived exile and are living under Persian rule. Some have returned to Jerusalem, but coming home hasn't magically fixed everything. The city, the Temple, and the community all have to be rebuilt. Through some wonderfully strange visions, Zechariah asks what it means to begin imagining a future when the world you knew is gone. We'll explore what was happening historically, why Zechariah wrote the way he did, and what this ancient community might teach us about learning to hope again.
METHODIST MOMENT — WILL ANIMALS BE IN HEAVEN?
September is Animal Justice Month at Mosaic, so our Methodist Moments are going to the animals too. This week we'll meet a side of John Wesley you may not have encountered before. Wesley believed God's restoration wasn't only about human beings. In his sermon The General Deliverance, he wrestled with what Paul's promise of liberation for “the whole creation” might mean for animals. So, did John Wesley think our animals might have a place in God's future? We'll give you a hint: Wesley's answer may be much bigger than you expect.
KIDS — BRING SOMETHING FOR THE RAINBOW RUG!
Our kids are part of the community, so instead of adults always preaching a children's sermon to them, the Rainbow Rug gives our kids a chance to share their own little sermons with us. Kids are invited to bring a favorite toy, stuffed animal, book, rock, drawing, something they made, something they found outside, or anything else they'd like to show us. Childcare is available after the Rainbow Rug, and children are also always welcome to remain in worship. Wiggles, noises, questions, and moving around are part of having children in a community.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Whatever makes you feel comfortable being you. Dress up because you love dressing up or come in jeans, shorts, a T-shirt, bright colors, makeup, no makeup, or whatever feels right to you. There isn't a Mosaic version of what you're supposed to look like at church. Come comfortable. Show us your true self.
